Butte
is full of community garden spaces! Lot of empty lots await a steward
ready to create a place of play or gardening, of peace and beauty. Our program
seeks to set a template for such stewards to easily access their vision.
Through seeking stewardship of an empty city owned lot just west of our
current home, we seek to fortify our program with functional relationships
with our own City Parks and Recreation, the Urban Renewal and Green-up
Butte, Mainstreet Uptown Butte, and adjacent landowners. Our first project
was a small endeavor just down from Montana Tech's entry on Park Street.
This is Butte's first native garden, and Sacred Ground's first project.
Stewardship was granted by George Everett and Mainstreet Butte. Catherine
Cain, through her native plant business
Southwest Montana Native Landscapes LLC and the funds of Mainstreet
Butte, the Montana Tech Foundation, Culture Program and Faculty Union
helped populate the site with a generous walk though the native landscape
of the Rocky Mountains. We hope to add more plants this year and identifing
labels. Special thanks to Catherine for her generous support, Noorjahan
Parwana and Sherry Vogel for weeding companionship and design consulting!
The second community garden is starting to take shape. This is the site of the new Park Street Community Garden. See what's happening at the garden.
